Originating from the... er, "Original" shape of the 1987 Sherlock Holmes series, the "XL11" is in essence the classic Peterson "05" Calabash writ large. The Calabash is, of course the shape Sherlock himself has traditionally been portrayed smoking, allegedly because the deeply bent form made it easier for actors playing the part of the master detective to keep the pipe in their mouths when their hands were busy (the fact that it was a pipe easy to spot even far back from the stage probably didn't hurt either).
